Biblical literacy may have declined in the postmodern West,
but
some
readers of scripture are engaging it with fresh eyes and ears, recognizing
its narrative art and drama, and discovering ways old and new to read, hear, wrestle
with, internalize,
and re-present its
stories and images to people as hungry as ever for something more than
just historical and scientific
analysis of this spiritual and artful medium.
The new material on this site reflects my
interest in Mark's Gospel as a performance piece, a
premodern, first-century narrative drama still resonating in our
twenty-first century, postmodern
world. Whether one considers it sacred narrative, or just a
classic of western culture, it is well worth reading or—even
better—hearing and seeing!
The archived material dates from a time when I led congregational
worship and taught college classes in New Testament. While much of
this material no longer reflects my own evolving views, I am
leaving it up for people who still use it as a resource.
